U.S. SECRETARY OF COMMERCE TO VISIT KU

LAWRENCE -- United States Secretary of Commerce William M. Daley, along with local and regional business leaders, will visit the University of Kansas Sept. 24 as part of a national trade education tour.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in the Kansas Union's Alderson Auditorium, Daley and area business leaders will talk about the effects of international trade at the local level. The KU event is free and open to the public. Earlier in the day, Daley will visit several Kansas City-based companies and tour a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle manufacturing plant.

"There isn't a soul in America who in one way or another isn't affected by international trade," Daley said. "If we don't provide people with the education and tools and the incentive to increase international trade, we risk growing trade deficits, reduced capital for research and development and a loss of our commanding position in the global marketplace. Trade is too often demonized as a bad actor in our domestic economy. It is important to ensure that American workers, families and communities fully understand the benefits of trade and the important role that it will play in the future of this county and the future of their children."

At the KU event, Daley will participate in a panel discussion with the following individuals:

KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway will welcome the group to campus. Charles Ranson, president, Kansas Inc., will moderate the panel discussion. The panel members will make brief remarks before fielding questions from the audience. KU students studying law, business and economics are expected to be in attendance at the event.

Starting in Boston and Providence last May, Daley has visited seven American cities as part of his "Trade Globally, Prosper Locally" tour. After his appearance in Lawrence, he will travel to Wichita. In October, he will visit Mississippi, and in November, Los Angeles. The event in Lawrence was organized by KU's Center for International Business Education Research.
