LAWRENCE - Two University of Kansas students are recipients of the ninth annual student-funded $500 Ex.C.E.L Award for Excellence in Community, Education, and Leadership, given by KU Student Union Activities and the Board of Class Officers.
Winners Eric Rush, Topeka junior, and Brenda Chung, Hong Kong senior, will be formally recognized Saturday, Oct. 2, during pregame ceremonies at KU's homecoming football game against Southern Methodist University in Memorial Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway; Camille Payne, SUA vice president for University Relations from Kearney, Neb.; and Jonathan Alt, Board of Class Officers president from Winnetka, Ill., will present the awards.
Ex.C.E.L awards are given to a male student and a female student who demonstrate outstanding leadership and communications skills, involvement in the KU community, academic scholarship and the ability to work with a variety of students and student organizations.
To be eligible for the Ex.C.E.L Award, applicants must be full-time undergraduates with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and submit two recommendations from the university community or a community service agency.
Rush is a student senator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and an undergraduate representative to the University Council. He is an executive board member for Battenfeld Scholarship Hall and the All Scholarship Hall Council. In 1996, he was named a National Merit Commended Scholar. Rush has volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Topeka for six years.
Chung is Student Union Activities vice president for membership development and is a student representative to the Memorial Corporation Board. She has served as an orientation assistant for new KU students and as a senior resident assistant in McCollum Hall. Chung was named the Outstanding International Woman Student for the 1998-1999 school year.
