LAWRENCE INDIAN ARTS SHOW ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNERS

LAWRENCE -- Prize winners and participants in the Eleventh Annual Lawrence Indian Arts Show juried competition have been announced by show officials. Opening Sept. 11, the juried exhibit will present the works of 76 artists representing 49 tribes and 12 states.

Prize money totaling $7,550, awarded in two- and three-dimensional categories, includes two best-of-show awards of $1,500 each, 14 merit awards of $300 each and $350 in youth competition awards. This year's judges were Margaret Archuleta, Phoenix, and Ruthe Blalock Jones, Okmulgee, Okla.

Award recipients at this year's juried show included best-of-show winners Kevin Warren Smith, two-dimensional art, and Barbara Ann Francis, three-dimensional art.

Merit award winners were: Linda Lomahaftewa, Tom Fields, Greg Bigler, Gwen Coleman, Gordon Coons, Conrad House, Sharon Dryflower Reyna, Sandra Walter, Nathan Hart, Nuvadi Dawahoya, Reuben Kent, Betty Yellowhorse, Shawn Blue Jacket and Joe Baca. Honorable mentions were awarded to Barbara Francis, John Shopteese, Elizabeth Whitethorne-Benally, Marcus Cadman, Mac Coyote, Kalley Keems, Roger Cain, George Blackwood, Nathan Hart, Victoria McKinney, Jackie Sevier and Pam Lujan-Hauer.

The annual juried youth competition represents the work of eight young American Indian artists. Best of youth division first place went to Faith Coyote, second place to Rochelle Simpson, and third place to Joshua Eaton.

The Lawrence Indian Arts Show begins at the University of Kansas Museum of Anthropology with a benefit opening, by reservationat 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10. First-nighters will have the opportunity to preview and purchase artworks before the juried show opens to the public on Sept. 11. The show and sale will remain on exhibit at the museum until Oct. 24. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be an admission charge during the exhibit of $3 for adults and $1 for students, with children under five free. All proceeds from the admission charge will go to support the 2000 show.

The Eleventh Annual Indian Market takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at Haskell Indian Nations University, 155 Indian Ave., in Lawrence. The two-day outdoor market brings to the Midwest over 150 American Indian artists from across the United States. The event will give visitors an opportunity to see and purchase original artworks. Some of the artists will also be demonstrating their art form. Entertainment will be scheduled throughout the day.

The Lawrence Indian Arts Show creates an opportunity for the public to view and gain an appreciation of works currently being produced by American Indian artists. In both the juried competition and the market, the public will have the opportunity to view the talents and skills of these artists in baskets, beadwork and quillwork, jewelry, kachina dolls and other wood carvings, pottery, sculpture, textiles and paintings, drawings and graphics. Many new artists are involved in this year's juried competition and market.

Other events scheduled Sept. 11 through Oct. 24 are Navajo weavings by contemporary Navajo weavers at the Lawrence Arts Center, Ninth and Vermont streets; an exhibit of American Indian art from a private collection at KU's Spencer Museum of Art; book discussions at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont, and a workshop on Acoma Pueblo pottery making at Haskell Indian Nations University.
