LAWRENCE--Four University of Kansas jazz groups will perform in a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, in the Lied Center. Sharing the bill will be the KU Jazz Ensemble II, Jazz Ensemble III, 12:30 Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and 4:30 Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Kerry Marsh, Great Bend graduate student, is director of the 13-member 4:30 Vocal Jazz Ensemble, which will open the concert. The choir's program includes "Daahoud" by Clifford Brown, arranged by Paris Rutherford; "Dare the Moon" by Darmon Meader, and "What Kind of Fool Am I?" by Bricusse and Newly, arranged by Jakob Marstrand.
Marsh also directs the 12:30 Vocal Jazz Ensemble, which will sing "Anthropology" by Charlie Parker, arranged by Rutherford; "Got to Get You Into My Life" by Lennon and McCartney, arranged by Roger Treece; "Morning" by Paul Stiller; and "My Favorite Things" by Richard Rogers, arranged by Keith Power.
The 14-piece KU Jazz Ensemble III, directed by Fred Mulholland, Topeka graduate student, will play "Bird Count" by Maria Schneider; "Shark Sandwich" by Darren Jenkins; "Stella by Starlight" by Washington and Young, arranged by Tom Matta; "There Will Never Be Another You" by Warren and Gordon, arranged by Jenkins; and "Tribute" by Bob Mintzer.
Closing the jazz concert will be KU Jazz Ensemble II, a 16-piece band directed by Tina Claussen, LaCrosse, Wis., graduate student. Its program will include "Just Below the Surface" by Dan Gailey, KU director of jazz studies; "A Matter of Time" by Jesse Krebs; "A Room With A View" by David Springfield; "Urbal Lung Comedy" by Gordon Goodwin; "Crackdown" by Thad Jones; and "Incredible Journey" by Mintzer.
