LAWRENCE--The University of Kansas Symphonic Band will present its spring concert at 7.30 p.m. Monday, April 10, in the Lied Center. Joining resident conductor Robert E. Foster, KU director of bands, for the concert will be guest conductor Brian Priestman, KU's director of orchestral activities.
The band will open its spring program with "Fiesta Del Pacifico" by Roger Nixon.
The remaining works on the band's program include:
* "Fugue ala Gigue" by J.S. Bach, a work arranged for military band in 1928
by Gustav Holst.
* "Blow!" by Arne Mellnas, a work written in 1974 for a regional wind
ensemble in Kariskrona, Sweden.
* "Armenian Dances" by Aram Khatchaturian, composed in 1943 for the Red
Army Cavalry Band and adapted to modern American band instrumentation by
Ralph Satz.
* "In Storm and Sunshine" by J. C. Heed, edited by John R. Bourgeois, a
part of the circus band repertoire for many years.
* "Chester" by William Schuman, published in 1957 and based on the American
Revolutionary marching song.
* "Chester Leaps In" by Steven Bryant, a whimsical new work based on
Schuman's "Chester."
* "A Grainger Set" including "Colonial Song" and "Shepherd's Hey" by Percy
Aldridge Grainger, who became well known in Lawrence during the 1940s when
he served as a guest conductor for the Midwestern Music Camp for some 10
consecutive summers.
* "The Wind and the Lion" by Jerry Goldsmith, a symphonic suite for concert
band dedicated to the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. The
suite derived from the score of the epic movie, "The Wind and the Lion."
