LAWRENCE--The University of Kansas Jazz Ensemble I and the KU Jazz Singers will perform a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 14, in the Lied Center.
The Jazz Singers are directed by Mitos Cox, Seattle, Wash., graduate student, and the six-member group is accompanied by a four-piece ensemble. The Jazz Singers will open the concert, performing such selections as "Blood Count" by Billy Strayhorn, "Like A Lover," and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To," all arranged by Cox; "Caravan" by Juan Tizol, arranged by Darmon Meader; "Five After Never" by Kerry Marsh, Great Bend graduate student; and "Just The Two of Us," arranged by Erin Fishler.
KU Jazz Ensemble I is directed by Dan Gailey, KU director of jazz studies. For its portion of the program, the 18-piece jazz band will play such works as "Absolution" by Jim McNeely; "Epic Pepper Queen" by Joey Sellars; "Ladybug Caucus" by Gailey; "Old Folks," arranged by Gailey; "Sing, Sing, Sing," arranged by Jim McNeely; "Suite Time Suite" by Kenny Wheeler; "Tangos" by Vince Mendoza; and "Three and One" by Thad Jones.
General admission tickets for the jazz concert are available through the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for all students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
