Statement Re: Sexual assault on KU campus Aug. 10

This statement by Lynn Bretz, interim director of the Office of University Relations, is in regard to the violent rape that occurred last night (Aug. 10) on the KU campus:

We are alarmed and angry that such an attack could occur on our campus. Our thoughts are with the victim, her friends and family. We will help in any way we can.

Police officers from the KU Public Safety Office are aggressively investigating this crime. They have put out a Crimestoppers notice and will make every effort to apprehend the rapist.

While violent crime is extremely rare on this campus, we are not immune. The university works hard to make all incoming and current students and staff aware of crime and how to best protect themselves. We will be diligent at informing students about this incident and reminding them of the precautions they should take to protect their safety when on campus at night. These precautions include:

  • Walk or jog with friends. There is safety in numbers.
  • Walk in well-lighted areas on established paths. Avoid shortcuts that take you behind buildings, through alleys, or into wooded areas.
  • Be alert when approaching your car. Have your car keys in your hand. Check your car before getting in to make sure no one is hiding inside.
  • Drive on well-traveled roads, and keep your car maintained to avoid breakdowns.
  • Don't hitchhike or accept rides from people you don't know. Don't offer rides to people you don't know.

We encourage students or parents seeking more information about sexual assault prevention or support services for victims of sexual assault to contact any of the following offices:

  • Counseling and Psychological Services: 864-2277
  • Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center: 864-3552
  • KU Public Safety Office: 864-5900 (in an emergency, dial 911)
  • Rape Victim-Survivor Service: 841-2345
  • Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Program: 864-3552
  • Watkins Health Center: 864-9500

More information is available in the university's annual report on crime and safety on campus. It is available online at http://www.ku.edu/~kunews/2000/awareness00/default.html .
