LAWRENCE - University of Kansas faculty and administrators will officially welcome students during the convocation ceremony for KU's 135th year at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Lied Center.
The program opens with the premiere of a 10-minute video, "Once a Jayhawk ...," reviewing KU's history and traditions and showcasing opportunities for student involvement in campus and community activities. KU's Office of University Relations and Division of Continuing Education produced the video.
Ben Walker, student body president from Hutchinson, will join Chancellor Robert Hemenway and other administrators onstage at the Lied Center to greet the students. Trina Schartz, Lawrence graduate student, will provide sign language interpretation.
Hemenway will give the convocation address. Provost David Shulenburger will give the welcome and make introductions. Thomas Beisecker, chair of the University Senate Executive Committee and professor of communication studies, will offer greetings from the faculty.
The KU convocation band, directed by Robert E. Foster, KU director of bands, will perform the academic professional march and the music for the alma mater, "Crimson and the Blue," and "I'm a Jayhawk." Simon Carrington, professor of music, will direct the singing the alma mater and other songs.
