KU ready for students to return to campus
LAWRENCE - Saturday, Aug. 19, opens the start of Hawk Week at the University of Kansas. Hawk Week activities for returning and new students continue through Thursday, Aug. 24, the first day of classes for the fall 2000 semester.

(Meet at 8:20 a.m. at the chancellor's suite, then accompany him as he walks unannounced into classrooms to deliver the good news.)
On the first day of classes, Chancellor Robert Hemenway leads a surprise patrol around the campus to deliver $5,000 Kemper Awards for teaching excellence to unsuspecting professors. The classroom visits are exciting and emotional as the chancellor and Commerce Bank recognize some of KU's best teachers with W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence.

CHANCELLOR TO HELP STUDENTS MOVE INTO SCHOL HALL
9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, Margaret Amini Scholarship Hall, 1312 Louisiana St.
A whole lot of moving will be going on at KU's scholarship and residence halls on Saturday, Aug. 19. KU's chancellor will be on hand to help at KU's newest scholarship hall. This year, KU administrators helping students move in will also get some help from KU's football team and from United Parcel Service employees. (For details see accompanying press release.)

MORE EARLY-BIRD SCHOLARS WALK UP HILL
7:15 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, near scoreboard at south end of Memorial Stadium.
The largest group of Mount Oread Scholars in the program's five years will take a ceremonial walk up the hill on Monday, Aug. 21, and make a little history when they reach the top. (For details see accompanying press release.)

SPENCER LIBRARY HELPS STUDENTS MAKE HISTORY
8 a.m., Monday, Aug. 21, Spencer Research Library, between Strong Hall and the Campanile.
KU's Spencer Research Library will help a group of freshmen, the Mount Oread Scholars, make history at KU during a continental breakfast in the library at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21. (For details see accompanying press release.)

TRADITIONS NIGHT - PASSING OF THE TORCH
8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, Memorial Stadium.
A quick group lesson on "how to be a Jayhawk." Chancellor Robert Hemenway greets new and returning students in Memorial Stadium and invites them to learn the traditional "Rock Chalk Jayhawk" cheer and turn the stadium into a waving field of wheat - an action cheer known as "waving the wheat." They will also watch the passing of the torch ceremony, in which senior, junior and sophomore class representatives pass a lighted torch of knowledge in a run down Mount Oread into Memorial Stadium. Speakers: Jack Wright, professor of theatre; James Carothers, professor of English; Ben Walker, student body president; Bob Frederick, athletic director; Stanley Redwine, KU track coach; and Jennifer Sanner, KU Alumni Association.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, Woodruff Auditorium, Kansas Union.
Reginald Robinson, counselor to the chancellor, will speak on service learning at 10 a.m. in Woodruff Auditorium. At 11 a.m. students will gather in the auditorium lobby area (Union's fifth floor) to volunteer to work with any of 15 to 20 Lawrence community service agencies that morning.

KU OPENS 135TH YEAR WITH NEW VIDEO
8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, Lied Center.
University of Kansas faculty and administrators will officially welcome students during the convocation ceremony for KU's 135th year at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23. The program opens with the premiere of a 10-minute video, "Once a Jayhawk ...," reviewing KU's history and traditions and showcasing opportunities for student involvement in campus and community activities. SORORITY RUSH WEEK
Sunday, Aug. 20, to Friday, Aug. 25.
Approximately 850 women will participate in the annual process of pledging a sorority during rush week.

LIED CENTER'S FREE OUTDOOR CONCERT
6:45 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, Lied Center lawn.
Live music will be performed by the Coyote Project, the Michael Beers Band and the Jesse Jackson 5. Students need to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets. An information fair showcasing local arts and community organizations will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Lied Center garden courtyard, on the east side of the building.

FOOTBALL RALLY & FLOATING FLICK
6 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, Memorial Stadium.
9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, Potter Lake.
Join in the fifth annual Lawrence Journal World and KU Football Get Ready Rally, which will include games, prizes, giveaways, team autographs and free food before a pep rally begins at 8 p.m. The rally ends about 9:30 p.m., just in time to walk over to Potter Lake, spread out a picnic blanket and maybe rub on a little bug repellent and watch "Jaws" on a big screen floating in the lake.
