Go to Scholarship, residence hall factoids
LAWRENCE - University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway will help residents of KU's newest scholarship hall move in between 9 and 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Margaret Amini Hall, 1312 Louisiana St.
Campus residences open Saturday, Aug. 19, and classes begin Thursday, Aug. 24. The return of students to campus marks the start of Hawk Week.
For the past three years, Chancellor Hemenway and other university administrators have helped students move into campus residences before the fall semester begins. This year, KU administrators are getting some help from KU's football team and from United Parcel Service employees.
Football team members will be helping at McCollum, Ellsworth, Hashinger, Lewis and Templin residence halls, all on Engel Road, from 1 to 3 p.m.
A crew of 25 UPS employees be helping with the move-in at Oliver Hall, 1815 Naismith Drive, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. UPS is volunteering to help with move-in day as a part of the firm's community partnership with KU. UPS is also providing a "relaxation tent" with misting fans and refreshments on the Oliver Hall lawn.
AMINI FACTS
KU is one of only a few public universities with scholarship halls.
Koli "K.K." and Margaret Amini, both KU alumni from San Antonio, provided $1.5 million for the construction of the new hall - an architectural twin of and adjacent to K.K. Amini Hall, 1318 Louisiana. Margaret Amini Hall is a women's residence and K.K. Amini, which opened in 1992, is a men's residence.
The Aminis have contributed a total of $2.5 million for the construction of the two scholarship halls at KU. Margaret Wenski Amini, a Kansas City, Kan., native, received a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1946. K.K. Amini received a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering in 1949. As an undergraduate, K.K. Amini was a resident of KU's Battenfeld Scholarship Hall, 1425 Alumni Place.
Total square feet (each Amini hall) = 16,600
Project costs (Margaret Amini Hall) = $2.9 million
Construction costs per square foot = $135 ($95, for men's in 1992)
Number of floors in each = 4
Living room = common space on first floor
Kitchen and dining rooms = common space on basement floor
Special features = four-person suites

SCHOLARSHIP HALL FACTS
