LAWRENCE - In a nationwide survey of high school guidance counselors, the University of Kansas received high ratings for academic competitiveness, quality of education versus cost, career services and trendiness.
The survey, published recently in the 2001 Kaplan Newsweek College Catalog, asked guidance counselors from U.S. public and private high schools to recommend colleges and universities based on their specialized knowledge of those schools.
According to the survey, KU ranks among the top 10 U.S. schools that are "hot" and "trendy." Counselors said students told them KU was popular because of the majors it offers, its athletics, its family tradition, and because it is a "cool place to go." Kaplan listed 33 universities in this group.
Counselors also placed KU in the following national categories: schools that are academically competitive, schools that offer the best value for your education dollar and schools that offer the best career services.
Kaplan divided the data into national and regional lists. KU also was listed as one of eight universities in the south-central region (Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas) known for being academically competitive, one of eight universities in the region known for its career services, and one of 10 universities in the region known for being trendy.
"We're delighted to be included in Kaplan's latest catalog," said Alan Cerveny, director of KU's Office of Admissions and Scholarships. "It's further evidence that people across the nation are noticing the great things we have to offer students at the University of Kansas."
The Kaplan Newsweek College Catalog reviews and rates more than 1,100 U.S. colleges and universities and covers admissions, academics, selectivity, financial aid and student life.
