Media Advisory: KU profs to receive $5,000 surprises Thursday

Chancellor Robert Hemenway will lead a surprise patrol around the University of Kansas campus to deliver $5,000 Kemper Awards for teaching excellence to unsuspecting professors on Thursday, Aug. 24, the first day of classes at KU. The classroom visits are exciting and emotional as the chancellor and Commerce Bank recognize some of KU's best teachers with W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence. A release will be issued at 3:30 p.m. Thursday with the full list of that day's award winners.

Eight awards will be presented between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. and four after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Reporters and photographers interested in covering the surprise presentations to faculty should meet at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the chancellor's suite, 230 Strong Hall. Three parking spaces on Jayhawk Boulevard will be reserved for TV media.

REPORTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE PATROL AFTER 8:30 A.M. should contact the Office of University Relations at (785) 864-3256 to make arrangements to find the group as it makes its rounds.
