KU takes steps to reduce water usage

Following is a memo describing measures to be taken by the University of Kansas in response to the recent City of Lawrence request for water conservation.

To: Deans, Directors, Chairs and Vice Chancellors
From: David Shulenburger, Provost
Date: August 29, 2000
Re: Water Conservation Measures

I am calling on your efforts to help conserve water to the extent possible in light of the city's request. The city is asking the major users of water to voluntarily cut back to avoid mandatory water restrictions or an increase in certain water rates. The necessity to conserve water could easily develop into a critical situation. By taking simple steps to conserve, we ease the burden placed on the city's water storage, purification, distribution and treatment facilities.

Until further notice, the following steps are being taken:

1. Water to the various fountains about campus will be shut down by Facilities Operations. These would include Chi Omega, Murphy Hall, scholarship halls and Continuing Education.

2. Lawn sprinklers will be shut off at the Pioneer Cemetery, Youngberg Hall, Watkins Hospital, campanile hill and Anschutz Library.

3. We will stop watering all flower beds with the hope that the perennials might go dormant and survive.

4. Department of Athletics will be reducing water consumption, where possible, without sacrificing the safety of student athletes as they practice and compete on the athletic fields.

5. Student Housing and the Alumni Center have discontinued all watering of lawns and shrubbery with the exception of the new plantings.

6. We will stop watering plantings at the Irving Hill Garage, yet continue to water the new sod and plantings at the Mississippi Street Garage to protect a recent investment in landscaping.

7. Motor Pool will reduce the washing of university vehicles. Facilities Operations trucks and equipment will not be washed.

8. Student Housing has been asked to request that all student residents report water leaks in sinks, showers and baths, turn off water while brushing teeth, shaving or shampooing, and wash only full loads in the washing machines.

9. Unit heads are being requested to turn off water faucets, both hot and cold, and to report all leaks directly to Facilities Operations at 4-4770.

10. Faculty and staff using equipment requiring water for cooling should strive to use the minimum amount of water required and should cut the water supply off when not in use.

We will continue to work hard to balance the comfort of our staff, faculty and students with the real need to conserve on utilities and manage our budget.

Please assure the distribution of this memo to all employees under your supervision. Facilities Operations is willing to provide technical assistance if requested. Relay your questions or concerns to Assistant Provost Jim Long (4-4705), Facilities Planning and Management. I appreciate your attention to this important matter.
