KU students win art history awards

LAWRENCE - The Kress Foundation Department of Art History at the University of Kansas recently awarded more than $7,000 to outstanding students in the department.

The awards include the Amsden Book Awards, the Stockstad Awards, the Jon O'Neal Photography Awards and the Tim Mitchell Memorial Art History Award. The KU Endowment Association administers funds for the awards.

The Amsden Book Awards are named for the late Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Amsden, Wichita, who had contributed to the department since 1976.

The Stokstad Awards recognize graduate students in art history who have made a major contribution to the educational mission of the department. The award was established by Marilyn Stokstad, the Judith Murphy distinguished professor of art history.

The Jon O'Neal Photography Awards, given to undergraduate students in the History of Photography class, are named for Jon O'Neal, a KU alumnus who funds the award. O'Neal, a physician, is also a professional photographer.

The Tim Mitchell Memorial Art History Award, which recognizes outstanding academic performance in the graduate program, is given in honor of Tim Mitchell, who was a faculty member at KU from 1979 until his death in 1993.
