2 KU students win national Golden Key scholarships

LAWRENCE -- Two University of Kansas students recently received 2000-01 Ford Motor Company/Golden Key undergraduate scholarships for being named outstanding new members of KU's chapter of Golden Key International Honor Society.

Michael Martin, Clay Center junior in environmental studies, and Jamie Zerbe, Council Grove senior in biochemistry, received the scholarships.

Martin and Zerbe were recognized during a Nov. 15 ceremony in the Kansas Union in which more than 600 KU juniors and seniors were inducted into Golden Key.

Golden Key membership is by invitation to juniors and seniors who are in the top 15 percent of their graduating class. They must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher to be considered for admittance to the society.

Golden Key International Honor Society is a nonprofit, academic honors organization with 250 university chapters worldwide. The society was founded in 1977 on the principles of scholarship, service and recognition. Since then, Golden Key has inducted more than 850,000 lifetime members worldwide.

One faculty member was named an honorary member of KU's chapter. Annette Stanton, professor of psychology, was selected for her contributions to the community, the university and its students. Up to five honorary members from KU and the Lawrence community are inducted annually.
