East Asia Institute offered for Kansas schoolteachers

LAWRENCE -- An East Asia Institute for Kansas middle and high school teachers, which includes $1,000 in benefits for participants, is being offered Saturday mornings from Jan. 20 to March 10 at the University of Kansas.

Teachers need to apply by Jan. 15 for the curriculum enrichment institute, said Nancy Hope, outreach coordinator for KU's Center for East Asian Studies.

The Kansas Constortium for Teaching about Asia and KU's Center for East Asian Studies are the institute hosts. The institute is offered to help teachers integrate state and national curriculum standards for world history into their classrooms. The Freeman Foundation of Stowe, Vt., provided funding for the institute.

Participating teachers receive $1,000 in benefits for successfully completing the institute. Those benefits include
 • $200 worth of books for personal use.
 • a $250 stipend upon completion of the institute and submission of three lesson plans using primary sources.
 • a $250 stipend in the 2002-3 academic year for implementing the lesson plans.
 • a $300 mini-grant for professional materials for their schools.

In addition, outstanding participants in the institute will have opportunities for subsidized travel to East Asia. Teachers of world history, world literature and world geography and of gifted students are encouraged to apply, Hope said. No previous background in Asian studies is required. The East Asia Institute is open to both public and private school teachers in Kansas.

KCTA is a member of the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, which is underwritten by the Freeman Foundation and includes nearly 20 colleges and universities nationwide. The consortium works with teachers and school districts to enhance education about East Asia in middle and high school classes.
