History professor to appear on ABC-TV's 'Millionaire'

LAWRENCE -- Jeffery Moran, assistant professor of history at the University of Kansas, will be one of the 10 contestants competing for a chance to sit in the hot seat on ABC-TV's "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?" at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17.

The show was taped Dec. 7 in New York City. Moran and his wife, Susan Kang, the trustee for Douglas County District Court, were flown to New York for the taping.

"If you watch, you'll see me for three or four seconds at the start of the show," Moran said. Only two of the 10 contestants made it into the hot seat for this episode.

Two episodes were taped on Dec. 7. Moran met at least two more contestants who were KU alumni including Fowler Jones, a 1988 KU graduate, who won $125,000 in the episode broadcast Dec. 14.

Each contestant may select five people to serve as lifelines for help with tough questions. Moran selected KU history faculty colleague, Jonathan Earle, to serve as one of his "call-a-friend" lifelines. Earle is no stranger to game shows: In April, he was a contestant on "Jeopardy."

"A lot of university professors would deny ever having watched these quiz shows, but most wouldn't mind winning the cash," Moran noted.

"You realize everybody has different patches of knowledge," Moran said of the show. He spent some time boning up on popular culture before this "Millionaire" appearance. "I read the last two months worth of People magazine. I realized I am becoming ever more concerned about the dating relationship between Britney [Spears] and Justin [Timberlake]," Moran noted in jest.

Moran, author of "Teaching Sex: The shaping of adolescence in the 20th century," gave show host Regis Philbin an autographed copy of his book published this spring by Harvard University Press.

Moran will be watching the show Sunday night from his home in Lawrence. "My whole family will be watching, if for nothing else but to mock me." His parents live in Madison, Wis. -30-
