LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network has launched its annual Help Expand Audio-Reader (HEA-R) fund-raising campaign. Proceeds will be used to improve and expand Audio-Reader's services and to buy more closed-circuit radios for blind and print-disabled listeners. Funds also will be used to finance subscriptions for newspapers, magazines and other printed materials that are broadcast by Audio-Reader volunteers.
The theme of this year's campaign is "Giving the Gift of Sight Through Sound." Audio-Reader's services are available free of charge to individuals who are unable to read standard size print. Broadcasts are transmitted by the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation Satellite Network and are broadcast on the subcarrier frequency of various FM stations and cable systems throughout Kansas and western Missouri. Broadcasts can be accessed on the Internet at www.ku.edu/~arnet.
Audio-Reader also provides recordings on a dial-up information system known as Telephone Reader, offers audio description of area music and theatre events, and provides a special request cassette taping service.
All donations are tax-deductible and contributions may be sent to Audio-Reader at PO Box 847, Lawrence, KS 66044. KU employees can make contributions via payroll deduction by contacting KU Endowment or human resources. For more information about contributing to Audio-Reader, or to learn about receiving Audio-Reader's broadcasts in your area, contact KU's Audio-Reader Network at 1-800-772-8898 or (785) 864-4634.
