Clinton names KU graduate for federal judgeship

LAWRENCE--President Clinton has nominated University of Kansas graduate Mary H. Murguia to the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.

Murguia, a Kansas City, Kan. native who now lives in Phoenix, Ariz., has been an assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona since 1990, and has served on detail as the director of the executive office for U.S. Attorneys at the Department of Justice since 1999. Murguia previously served as that office's principal deputy director (1999) and counsel to the director's staff (1998-1999).

She began her legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office in Kansas City, Kan. (1985-1990).

Murguia received a bachelor's of arts degree in Spanish and a bachelor's of science degree in journalism from KU in 1982 and her J.D. degree from the KU School of Law in 1985.

Her brother, Carlos Murguia, was named a U.S. District Court judge for the District of Kansas in 1999. He is a 1982 KU graduate.
