KU gives four outstanding-dissertation awards

LAWRENCEÆÆThe University of Kansas Graduate School presented the Marnie and Bill Argersinger Award and the Dorothy Haglund Prize for outstanding doctoral dissertations to four graduates at its 2000 doctoral hooding ceremony in May.

Argersinger Awards were presented to Shawn Michael Stone, who received his doctorate in physics and astronomy, and to Debbie Jeanette Le Roux, who received her doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology. Haglund awards were presented to Randall R. Griffey, who received his doctorate in art history, and Pierre Olivier Soulliac, who received his doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry.

The Dorothy Haglund Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation was established in 1979 through the generosity of former vice chancellor and dean William J. Argersinger, his wife, Marnie, and their friends in cooperation with the KU Endowment Association. The prize was established to honor the late Dorothy Haglund, who served graduate students at KU from 1940 to her retirement in 1983. In 1992, an additional dissertation prize, the Marnie and Bill Argersinger Award, was established.
