Audio-Reader volunteers win 2 international awards

LAWRENCE--Kansas Audio-Reader Network volunteers received two Program of the Year awards from the International Association of Audio Information Services during the IAAIS convention May 31 to June 4 in Washington D.C.

University of Kansas volunteer readers won the Best Newspaper Reading Award and the Best Short Stories Series Award.

Harlan Roedel, retired University Relations staff member, and Elinor P. Schroeder, KU distinguished professor of law, were the award-winning readers for the Best Newspaper Reading Award. They read the Kansas City Star and the Topeka Capital-Journal for the Breakfast Table Times.

Paul G. Friedman, associate professor of communication studies, and his children, Joy and Glenn, were the volunteer readers winning the Best Short Series Award. The Friedmans read "Nothing But The Truth" a book by Avi, which was read as part of the Lawrence public schools' "If All of Lawrence Read the Same Book" 1999 reading event.

Janet Campbell, audio-reader director, and four staff members attended the convention. Lori Miller, audio-reader program manager, accepted the awards on behalf of the staff.

The Audio-Reader Network provides a radio reading service and a dial-in newspaper service free of charge for anyone who has difficulty reading printed material. Coverage includes Kansas, western Missouri, and limited areas of Oklahoma, Colorado and Arkansas. The signal is transmitted to the listener as a hidden carrier on a standard FM radio station or through local cable TV service. Some cable systems provide a signal that can be heard by hooking up the cable to an FM radio or stereo, but in most cases a special radio receiver is required.
