KU pharmacy camp draws high school students

LAWRENCE--Ever wonder how they make that white paste that lifeguards wear to protect their noses from sunburn?

Eighteen high school students from Kansas and two other states will find out that answer and much more when they attend this year's School of Pharmacy Summer Camp at the University of Kansas.

The camp, now in its fourth year, will be June 11 to 16 on the KU campus.

Along with intensive hands-on lab projects that include testing for diabetes and learning how to make the zinc oxide ointment that protects against sunburn, the students will meet with KU School of Pharmacy professors, and will tour KU's facilities, several pharmacies in the Lawrence and Kansas City areas, and the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

"We want to show them that pharmacy is a very diverse profession," said Gene Hotchkiss, assistant to the dean and organizer of the camp. "Most of these students have a perception of the corner drugstore, and the camp program enhances their understanding of the broad scope and diversity of opportunities in the pharmacy profession and gives them a better idea of what pharmacists actually do."
