WHO
Anita Herzfeld, president of Phi Beta Delta, an international honor society
for international students in the U.S., will speak briefly about her own
experiences as a Fulbright Scholar to the United States from Argentina in
1961 and as an international scholar in other countries as well. Herzfeld is
associate professor of Latin American studies and has received four
Fulbright grants in her academic career. From 1977 to 1985, Herzfeld was
associate director for international studies and director of study aboard
programs at KU. Earlier, she served as director of KU's study abroad program
in Costa Rica for four years and for the junior year in Germany program. She
currently serves as a faculty adviser for Costa Rican students at KU.
Frances Margaret Li Lian Tan, president of KU's International Student
Association, will also make brief remarks. Tan is a senior from Malaysia
majoring in journalism and in theatre and film.
KU's Office of International Student Services and Office of International
Programs are sponsoring the reception.
More than 100 flags of nations represented by students and faculty at the
University of Kansas will be posted in the Kansas Union ballroom for KU's
first reception for its international community from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 11.
State legislators and officials as well as representatives of consulates in
the greater Kansas City area will join KU's Chancellor Robert Hemenway and
Provost David Shulenburger in welcoming the more than 1,700 students and
international scholars at KU this year.
