KU announces Mount Oread Scholars

LAWRENCE - The names of 320 freshmen Mount Oread Scholars at the University of Kansas have been announced by the Mount Oread Scholars Program in KUs Freshman-Sophomore Advising Center.

The fall 2000 class of Mount Oread Scholars is the largest since the program began in 1996, with 100 more scholars than the 1999 class.

The scholars literally made history Aug. 21 by contributing written impressions of their first week at KU to a time capsule that will be opened during their 25th college reunion. Their contributions to the time capsule culminated a walk up Mount Oread, the name early Lawrence pioneers gave the ridge on which the campus is built.

During commencement ceremonies in May, graduating students walk down the hill into Memorial Stadium. The walk up the hill is a reversal of what the Mount Oread Scholars will do at graduation.

The Mount Oread Scholars Program offers opportunities to academically qualified first-year students. Students are invited to join the program if they graduated in the top 20 percent of their high school class and received a composite score of 28 to 30 on the American College Test or an SAT score of 1,240 to 1,330. Educational opportunities extended to Mount Oread Scholars include personalized advising during summer orientation, the option to enroll in relatively small classes taught by experienced faculty members, and personal advisers in the academic field of their choice.

Students' names, majors, parents' names (if available) and home addresses are on the KU News Web site at: http://www.ku.edu/~kunews/2000/00N/Octnews/Oct12/directory.html.
