KU presents workshop on faculty preparation

LAWRENCE--The University of Kansas Graduate School is sponsoring "Preparing Future Faculty," a daylong symposium for graduate students, faculty and others.

The program will challenge the KU graduate faculty and administration to consider the ways in which their programs prepare graduate students for the professoriate Ü and its many roles and responsibilities Ü in a range of institutions.

Orlando Taylor, dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Howard University, will give the keynote address at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 23 in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union.

Taylor is chair-elect of the board of directors of the Council of Graduate Schools and recognized as a national leader in graduate education. He is an advisory council member for the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

During his remarks, Taylor will offer guidelines for establishing and sustaining faculty preparation programs.

Taylor has been a leader in the Preparing Future Faculty initiative, which is supported by the Council of Graduate Schools, the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the Pew Charitable Trust.

This initiative has encouraged research universities to develop programs that promote the preparation of future academic professionals.

The symposium also will feature two panel presentations addressing the transition from the role of graduate student to new faculty member. At 1:30 p.m. new KU faculty will discuss their experiences. Recent graduates from KU doctoral programs will describe how their graduate programs prepared them for the transition at 3:30 p.m. Both panels will meet in the Big 12 Room.

The symposium is co-sponsored by the Lila and Madison Self Graduate Fellowship. For more information, call Daphne Johnston at 864-4141.
