LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas officials have announced a plan to move the university's Web site and e-mail addresses from ku.edu to ku.edu over the next two to three years.
The change will start in the coming year, Provost David Shulenburger said.
"Many people know us as KU," said Marilu Goodyear, vice chancellor for information services and chief information officer. "There has been a growing dissatisfaction with 'ukans.'
"KU employees who frequently deal with external constituents often must explain or spell out the 'ukans' suffix. 'Ukans' is not intuitive or obvious."
The university chose ku.edu as its primary domain name when it connected to the Internet, but also registered ku.edu.
Requests for further use of the shorter, more easily remembered ku.edu have accumulated at a high rate, officials said.
Over the years, ku.edu has been increasingly put into use. For example, www.admissions.ku.edu has been the only address for the Office of Admissions and Scholarships Web site for the past year. The university Web site has been accessible at www.ku.edu and www.ku.edu for some time
Individuals with e-mail addresses user@ku.edu can already receive e-mail addressed to user@ku.edu. Mail to both addresses will continue to work during the transition period.
The domain name transition will mainly affect campus technical staff who operate departmental mail, Web and other servers. Academic Computing Services will assist departments with the change.
Changes will be made to stationery and other publications after current stocks are used, a process that likely will take at least two years.
The decision to move to ku.edu was made after several weeks of discussions, Goodyear said.
"We believe that students, faculty and staff will prefer the convenience of the ku.edu address. It is important that we support them in using it," she said.
