KU institute to host state economic policy conference

LAWRENCE-- Business leaders, educators and public planners are expected to attend the University of Kansas Policy Research Institute's Kansas Economic Policy Conference Oct. 20 on the KU campus. The conference theme is "Strategic Planning Initiatives for a 21st Century Economy. "

In addition to state and national economic forecasts for 2001, the conference features a talk, "Clusters of Innovation" by Kyle Peterson of ontheFrontier of Boston. Peterson will comment on the approach that ontheFRONTIER is using to study the Wichita area.

The keynote luncheon address, by Alec Hansen, president of Economic Competitiveness Group in Sausalito, Calif., will discuss strategic planning for Kansas.

Breakout sessions will include "The Kansas Skilled Work Force," "Capital, Taxation and Business Climate" and "Strategic Technologies." Participants will identify and assess issues relevant to the topic area. Information gathered will be used in developing the new Kansas strategic plan.

The Policy Research Institute, formerly the Institute for Public Policy and Business Research, was created by KU to bring university expertise in metropolitan studies, public policy and economics to the state, region and nation. PRI links the university to state and local governments, business and Kansas citizens.
