LAWRENCE--The Lied Center of Kansas New Directions Series presents "Dracula:
The Music and Film," with
original music by composer Philip Glass, performed by Glass and the Kronos
Quartet along with a presentation of the classic film at 8 p.m. Nov. 2.
The work will be conducted by Michael Riesman.
"Dracula: The Music and Film" features new music by Glass, who was asked to
create the first original musical score for the re-release of Dracula
(Universal Pictures 1931, starring Bela Lugosi) on video.
Glass composed the Dracula score specifically for the Kronos Quartet, the
pioneering American ensemble hailed as "classical music's own Fab Four" by
Rolling Stone.
For this production, the musicians will be located on the stage behind the
movie screen, which is also a scrim, so with special lighting they will be
visible to the audience. The running time for Dracula: The Music and Film is
approximately 80 minutes with no intermission. There will be a
post-performance Artists' Talk-Back from the stage with Philip Glass and the
Kronos Quartet.
