Audio-Reader celebrates birthday with open house

LAWRENCE - The University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network will celebrate its 29th birthday with an open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11. The public is invited to tour the facility, located at 1120 W. 11th St. on the KU campus. Punch and birthday cake will be served.

Audio-reader is a radio reading service for the blind and print-disabled. It provides readings of current newspapers, books, magazines and other printed materials to individuals who are unable to read standard-size print.

Broadcasts are transmitted by the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation Satellite Network and are broadcast on the subcarrier frequency of various FM stations and cable systems throughout Kansas and western Missouri. Audio-reader also provides recordings on a dial-up information system known as Telephone Reader, and offers a special request cassette taping service.

The program was founded by late Lawrence philanthropist Petey Cerf, and first began broadcasting on Oct. 11, 1971.
