LAWRENCE--Panels of African-American students at the University of Kansas will join area leaders for the program of KU's 15th Annual Black Leadership Symposium, "Black Leadership for the 21st Century," Thursday, Oct. 26 in the Kansas Union.
About 500 Kansas and Missouri students in grades 9 through12 who have at least a 3.25 grade-point average in their pre-college curriculum or who are viewed as gifted with leadership potential will attend this year's symposium. Participants of the African American Male Leadership Academy, sponsored by the Village Foundation of Alexandria, Va., are included in the symposium.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Level 5 of the Kansas Union. At 9:45 a.m. in Woodruff Auditorium, Jacob U. Gordon, executive director of KU's Center for Multicultural Leadership will introduce keynote speaker
Sheila Kinnard, a motivational speaker with the Center for Health and Wellness in Wichita.
Gordon will talk on "Black Leadership for Social Change" during the noon luncheon in the union ballroom. Gordon's speech is based on his new book published in August by Greenwood Press in Westport, Conn.
Area leaders meeting with symposium students include Barbara Ballard, KU associate vice chancellor for student affairs and a state representative for Kansas district 44, and Rod Bremby, assistant research professor and associate director of KU's Work Group on Health Promotion and Community Development in the human development and family life department.
Symposium sponsors include the Office of the Provost, Center for Multicultural Leadership, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of Admissions, Department of African and African-American Studies, KU Continuing Education and the U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau.
KU student panelists will speak at 1:45 p.m. in sessions meeting in Alderson Auditorium for ninth-grade students, the Kansas Room for 12th-grade students, and Woodruff Auditorium for students in grades 10 and 11. The panelists are
