KU to honor Shawnee Mission high school students at Overland Park

LAWRENCE--Students from five Kansas high schools will be honored Wednesday, Nov. 1, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

The students, seniors from the Shawnee Mission School District in Johnson County, will be named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7 p.m. program and reception at the Jewish Community Campus, 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park.

Honorees' names are listed below.

Michael Swann, associate dean of the school of architecture and urban design, will speak. Alumni Association representative Michon Licktieg Quick, director for Rock Chalk Society and greater Kansas City area programs, is in charge of award presentations.

Joyce Thompson, Shawnee Mission, is site coordinator. Chairpersons for the program are Joe Kurtzman, Overland Park, for Shawnee Mission Northwest High School; Joseph M. Nielsen, Shawnee, for Shawnee Mission North High School; Melissa Boos Nielsen, Shawnee, for Shawnee Mission West High School; Roger D. and Judith Duncan Stanton, Prairie Village, for Shawnee Mission East High School; and Mary Hibbert Patch, Overland Park, for Shawnee Mission South High School.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 76,000 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high school senior classes.
