Sophomore honor society plans community service projects

LAWRENCE--Changing places with University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway and volunteering to serve in a cafe for the homeless in the community are two projects the members of Lambda Sigma, a national honor society for sophomores, undertake each year.

This fall, David Ferraro, chapter president and Tulsa, Okla., sophomore in engineering, announced the group's plans and names of members.

"Lambda Sigma is an academic organization based on G.P.A. and leadership, but another aspect of our group is to serve the community in anyway possible," Ferraro said. "We try to put back into the community what we have gotten out of it."

Lambda Sigma members will volunteer at Jubilee Cafe Oct. 20, and they plan to adopt a family and visit a children's hospital during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Projects planned for spring include the College Bowl, a trivia game fund-raiser, and Hemenway for a Day, a raffle in which one student is awarded KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway's position for a day.

Ferraro will attend the national Lambda Sigma convention at the University of Alabama Oct. 6 to 8. The presidents of more than 20 chapters will attend.
