Child-care providers to meet Oct. 14 at KU

LAWRENCE - About 800 to 1,000 Kansas early child-care providers will be attending the annual conference of the Kansas Association for the Education of Young Children Oct. 14 at the University of Kansas.

Each year's conference takes place at a different location in Kansas, according to Alita Y. Cooper, KU professor emeritus of human development and family life. Cooper and members of the Douglas County Child Development Association organized the 2000 conference at KU.

Conference sessions will be in the Kansas Union and Smith and Fraser halls.

A pre-conference "Hands-On Science" workshop will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the Burge Union on Irving Hill Road. Following the workshop, participants will tour KU's new state-of-the-art $3.3 million Hilltop Child Development Center, 1605 Irving Hill Road.

"We didn't realize when we scheduled the conference that Late Night with Roy would be the same evening,"

Cooper said of the pre-conference workshop in the Burge Union, which shares a parking lot with Allen Fieldhouse. Parking for conference participants will be available at the Burge Union and at Hilltop Child Development Center.

Just as medical professionals and schoolteachers must meet state requirements to keep current in their work, early child-care providers are required to complete in-service training.

Featured speakers on Oct. 14 include:

  • Toni Boyles, Creative Training Institute of Topeka
  • James Boyer and Charles A. Smith, both of Kansas State University
  • Leon Greene, KU School of Education Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences; Nancy Peterson and Eva Horn, both of KU's Department of Special Education
  • Kathy Leon, YMCA, Kansas City, Mo.
  • Marcia Manter, Community Development Institute, Head Start of Kansas City, Mo.
  • Duane Whitbeck, Pittsburg State University
  • Becky Woerz, Professional Development Institute of Emporia

Other KU faculty participating in the conference include: Lynn Marotz in human development and family life; Betty Peterson in Dependent Care Referral Services of KU's human resources department; Kathy Vansaun of the Edna A. Hill Child Development Center in HDFL.
