LAWRENCE - Two University of Kansas freshmen who are second cousins and whose families have ties to KU dating back four generations will be honored as part of KU's Parents Day and Family Weekend this Saturday. The two freshmen are Harlan Cribbs Altman IV of Dallas and Wade Carr of Wellington.
Each year, a university special events committee selects a family to honor as part of the weekend events. Awards will be presented at the halftime of the KU-Southern Illinois University football game by Chancellor Robert Hemenway, Fred Williams, president of the Kansas Alumni Association, and Associate Provost Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett.
Altman, a graduate of Jesuit College Prep High School in Dallas, will be joined on the field by his parents Pamela, a 1973 KU graduate, and Harlan Cribbs Altman III, a 1973 and 1976 KU graduate; brother Chase Altman and uncle Kip Altman, all of Dallas. His paternal grandparents from Wellington, Harlan Altman Jr., a 1943 and 1949 KU graduate, and Virginia Phipps Altman, who attended KU in 1945; and his maternal grandparents from Colby, Donald Phillips, who attended KU in 1934, and Arliss Phillips; also will attend.
Carr, a graduate of Wellington High School, will be joined on the field by his parents David Carr and Colette Kocour Carr, both of Wellington and 1973 KU graduates; brother Max Carr, who is a KU senior in business and architecture; and aunt Sarah Carr, of Colorado Springs, Colo. His paternal grandparents from Wellington, Francis Carr, who attended KU in 1949, and Sarah Phipps Carr, a 1947 KU graduate, also will attend.
Both families are descendants of Harry K. Phipps, who attended KU in 1923.
A tailgate dinner will be served for preregistered families at 4 p.m. in a tent between the Campanile and Memorial Stadium. The dinner precedes the KU-Southern Illinois University football game at 6 p.m.
Public events during the weekend include open houses for academic and student affairs offices, walking tours of campus, a community service event and a parade. Theater and music productions are also scheduled.
