Program accompanies Holocaust exhibit at KU

LAWRENCE--The University of Kansas plans a program in conjunction with a Holocaust exhibit on display in September at KU.

The KU School of Law and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum will sponsor "Rescuing Refugees: 1941 and Today" at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in Room 104 at Green Hall.

Special guests for the program include Severin Hochberg, historian for the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the museum; Jerry Fowler, staff director for the Committee on Conscience at the museum; and U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.

The program is presented in conjunction with an exhibit from the museum, "Assignment: Rescue--The Story of Varian Fry and the Emergency Rescue Committee." The Max Kade Center for German-American Studies at KU is host for the exhibit, which will be displayed during the month at the Kansas Union Gallery.

The exhibit focuses on Varian Fry, an American journalist who helped thousands of people threatened by Nazi Germany escape from France.

Carl Strikwerda, KU history professor, will serve as program moderator.

Before the program, Hochberg and Fowler will be available for informal discussions at 10:30 a.m. at the exhibit.
