Black law students sponsor Thurgood Marshall law day

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Black Law Students Association is sponsoring the fifth annual Justice Thurgood Marshall Law Day from 8:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the University of Kansas School of Law in Green Hall.

The program seeks to increase students' awareness and appreciation of the history and development of American rights. Students will participate in faculty-led workshops, where they will discuss affirmative action and diversity, Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights and student violence. The workshops will demonstrate the effect of the law on the everyday lives of students. The Black Law Students Association will host 80 students from South and West Junior High Schools in Lawrence.

William Tuttle of the history department and Reginald Robinson of the chancellor's office will be the keynote speakers. The workshops will be lead by Roscoe Howard, Joyce Pearson and Jean Phillips of the law school.

Justice Thurgood Marshall Law Day is sponsored by Dillon's Supermarkets, Laidlaw Transportation and the KU law school.
