LAWRENCE -- At sunrise, three days before the fall 2001 semester opened at the University of Kansas on Aug. 23, more than 60 freshmen Mount Oread Scholars made a ceremonial walk up Mount Oread to begin their college careers. They are among the nearly 260 freshmen selected to be Mount Oread Scholars for the 2001-2002 academic year.
The walk up the hill from Memorial Stadium through the Campanile is a reversal of what these freshmen will do as graduating seniors. KU Provost David Shulenburger, Mount Oread Program Director Lloyd Sponholtz, and English Professor James Carothers, led the students in their walk up Mount Oread. Their walk concluded with a breakfast at KUÿs Spencer Research Library.
The Mount Oread Scholars Program offers opportunities to academically qualified first-year students. Students are invited to join the program if they graduated in the top 20 percent of their high school class and received a composite score of 28 to 30 on the American College Test or a SAT score of 1,240 to 1,330.
Educational opportunities extended to Mount Oread Scholars include personalized advising during summer orientation, the option to enroll in relatively small classes taught by experienced faculty members, and personal advisers in the academic field of their choice.
Students' names, majors, parents' names (if available) and home addresses are available here.
