LAWRENCE -- Five University of Kansas faculty members and graduate students
were honored with special awards at the Kennedy Center/American College
Theatre Region V Festival Jan. 16 to 20 at Johnson County Community College
in Overland Park.
The University Theatre's production of the new musical "Call of the Wild"
was selected for presentation at the festival, and three students from the
production were nominated to compete in the festival's Irene Ryan Acting
Competition. John Buxton, Wichita senior; Gina Grad, Overland Park senior;
and Tom Picasso, Overland Park junior, performed for the competition Jan. 16
and 17.
At an awards ceremony concluding the festival, the ACTF Award of Merit was
presented to Delores Ringer, associate professor of theatre and film, for
her scenic design for "Call of the Wild," and to Delbert Unruh, professor of
theatre and film and director of the University Theatre, for his lighting
design for the musical.
In addition, three graduate design students were awarded prizes in the ACTF
Graduate Design Competition. Brian Clinnin, Arlington Heights, Ill., won
first place in scenic design; Casey Kearns, Chadron, Neb., won second place
in scenic design; and Patrick Carierre, Bemidji, Minn., won second place in
the costume design competition.
