LAWRENCE --The Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, Mo. and the University of Kansas announced today they have reached an agreement designed to promote collaborations in medical research.
Under the agreement, Stowers, KU and the KU Medical Center will exchange data on current research programs and the areas of interest and expertise of their research scientists to see where collaboration would be most productive and efficient. When those areas are identified, the agreement sets up the framework jointly apply for contracts, federal grants and awards for medical research, instead of competing separately.
"Stowers and KU have already been exploring the possibilities of joint faculty appointments and joint use of scientific equipment," said Robert E. Hemenway, chancellor of the University of Kansas. "We see nothing but growing cooperation between the two institutions as the relationship grows."
"This agreement between the University of Kansas and the Stowers Institute exemplifies the spirit of cooperation that permeates the Kansas City area's life sciences community," said William B. Neaves, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of the Stowers Institute. "Drawing on each other's strengths and resources allows each institution to avoid duplication of effort and spending, and enables each organization to focus on what it does best."
Stowers scientists recently began work in its new Kansas City campus. The Stowers Institute is dedicated to conducting basic research into complex genetic systems to unlock the mysteries of disease and find the key to their causes, treatment and prevention.
KU officials estimate that the university's total research expenditures for fiscal year 2000 reached $190 million. KUMC medical research accounted for approximately $50 million of that total.
