Media Advisory Re: Brownback and Costa Rican president to discuss global warming

LAWRENCE -- U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback and President Miguel Angel Rodriguez of Costa Rica will host a press conference later today to discuss international support and interest in soil carbon research -- a field that has been heavily researched by scientists at the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing (KARS) program at the University of Kansas.

Several KU researchers in the KARS program are available to discuss the advantages of encouraging farmers to store carbon in their soil as a means of balancing the emission of greenhouse gases.

The KU researchers availble for comment are:
 • Ed Martinko, director of KARS, (785) 864-7770.
 • Theresa Crooks, KARS researcher and co-principal investigator of KU's carbon sequestration efforts, (785) 864-7369.

The press conference will take place at 3:30 p.m. today in the Mansfield Room, S-207 in the U.S. Capitol.

A previous press release detailing KU's soil carbon research can be found at: www.ur.ku.edu/News/01N/JanNews/Jan22/carbon.html.
