LAWRENCE -- Carl E. Locke Jr., dean of the University of Kansas School of
Engineering, has been elected to chair the Engineering Deans Council of the
American Society for Engineering Education. The position gives Locke a seat
on the ASEE national board of directors.
Locke took over duties for the position during the ASEE's annual convention
and exposition in late June in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Engineering Deans Council is composed of deans representing each of the
engineering colleges and schools that are members of the ASEE, as well as
representatives from interested affiliate colleges. The council has about
300 members.
The council strives to keep its members at the forefront of issues affecting
engineering and engineering education.
Each spring the council coordinates the Engineering Dean's Institute. "This
is probably the largest gathering of engineering deans in the country," said
Locke, who is a professor of chemical and petroleum engineering at KU.
The group also organizes a Public Policy Forum in February in Washington,
D.C. The meeting gives deans from around the country an opportunity to meet
with federal legislators and their staffs, as well as hear presentations
from governmental agencies that affect universities and science research.
Key activities for the Engineering Deans Council will be working more
closely with the ASEE's Corporate Member Council and working at the national
level to address engineer licensure regulations. Currently, there are 52
licensure agencies in the United States and its territories.
The American Society for Engineering Education is a nonprofit member
association, founded in 1893, dedicated to promoting and improving
engineering and technology education. It is composed of more than 12,000
deans, professors, instructors, students and industry representatives.
