LAWRENCE -- Newly named executive vice chancellor for university relations Janet Murguia will speak to 37 seventh graders participating in the Educational Talent Search at KU this week. Murguia will address the students at 1:30 p.m. Friday after the group has lunch at Mrs. E's, a dining facility adjacent to Lewis Residence Hall.

The group of seventh graders has been on campus since Monday for the weeklong intensive program. The daily schedule runs from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students are picked up in the morning at their homes, they have breakfast at Mrs. E's, then they split up into four groups to attend classes in topics from biology to pharmacy, come back for lunch at Mrs. E's, then participate in more activities, including recreation. The program theme this summer is "Discover Technology."

Educational Talent Search is one of several TRIO Programs, which were established by Congress to provide education opportunities for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background or socio-economic status. The purpose of TRIO is to enable students to achieve their academic and career ambitions by promoting equal educational opportunity in postsecondary education.

The majority of students who participate in Talent Search are from low-income families where neither parent earned a college degree. Through early intervention, Talent Search encourages participants to remain in school, graduate from high school, and pursue postsecondary education.

KU's Trio Programs include Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science Center, Student Support Services, Educational Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Programs.
