KU board to defer decision on houses

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Campus Historic Preservation Board is deferring review of a proposal to demolish three dilapidated houses KU owns in the 1300 block of Ohio Street, KU officials announced today.

The review was originally scheduled for the board to consider at its meeting at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union.

A review and decision on the Ohio Street properties will be made at a later meeting. The time, date and place of the meeting will be announced later. A public comment period will be part of that meeting.

KU has proposed clearing the property to make way for future scholarship halls. State law obligates the board to review the demolition of the houses because they are located within 500 feet of Spooner Hall on the KU campus and the Usher House at 1425 Tennessee St., which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
