LAWRENCE -- Sound decisions have led to honors for five University of Kansas students.

The students, four architectural engineering students and one architecture student, won commendation honors in the student design competition during the annual meeting of the Acoustical Society of America June 6 in Chicago.

The competition directed the students to design, from an acoustical viewpoint, an 800-seat music performance hall, rehearsal room and practice rooms for a college performing arts center near a major roadway. Each student team was required to present its design on two 30- by 42-inch posters.

The competition judges presented a first honors award and four commendation awards. KU sent two teams to the competition, both of which won commendation awards. The awards carry a $500 prize. First honors went to a team from the University of Hartford. Entries from MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute also won commendation awards.

One of the KU teams consisted of Brian Corry, a May 2001 architectural engineering graduate from Ballwin, Mo., and Lucy Williams, a May 2001 architecture graduate from St. Louis. The other team included architectural engineering students Greg Hughes of Ballwin, Mo., who plans to graduate in December 2001, Ryan O'Halloran of Chillicothe, Mo., a May 2001 graduate, and Jon Peterson of Hugoton, who plans to graduate in December 2001.
