KU produces children's health series for Kansas radio

SALINA -- Thousands of people in central and north-central Kansas can now listen to a series of weekly radio reports about the health of Kansas children. News-Talk Radio KSAL-AM 1150 in Salina has begun carrying "Kansas Kids: A Prescription for Change," a series of in-depth stories about children's health, produced by KANU-FM 91.5, the public radio station of the University of Kansas.

The series, which is carried by a number of Kansas radio stations, can now be heard every Saturday during the Salina station's mid-day newscast. The actual air time for stories, each between six and nine minutes in length, is about 12:35 p.m.

KANU General Manager Janet Campbell said, "KSAL's involvement will bring these issues to thousands of Kansans who, until now, might have only been able to hear these reports online through our Web site,http://www.KansasKidsHealth.org."

"Kansas Kids: A Prescription for Change" started as a news program for public radio stations, but is made available to commercial stations in parts of Kansas where public radio is not participating in the series.

KANU News Director J. Schafer said, "This partnership between public and commercial radio demonstrates how we can work together to focus attention on a topic that affects the whole state -- the well-being of Kansas children."

The children's health series is funded by a grant from the Kansas Health foundation in Wichita. Additional support for the series comes from KANU, Kansas Public Radio and the University of Kansas.
