Bush to nominate KU graduate for treasury post

Hometown: Independence, Kan.

LAWRENCE -- The White House has announced that President Bush intends to nominate University of Kansas graduate Sheila C. Bair to be assistant secretary of the treasury for financial institutions.

Bair is currently a consultant to the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, and from 1995 to 2000 she was senior vice president of the NYSE for government relations. From 1991 to 1995, Bair served as commissioner on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Originally from Independence, Kan., she earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1975 and a law degree in 1978 at KU.

Bush previously named KU graduate Kenneth Damto be deputy secretary of the treasury. Dam earned a bachelor's of science degree in business from KU in 1954.
