KU chancellor elected to prestigious education council

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway has been elected to the governing body of one of the nation's most important education advocacy groups.

Hemenway was elected to the American Council on Education board of directors at the council's annual meeting late last month in Washington, D.C.

As one of the 37 members of the council's board of directors, Hemenway will help set general policy for the council, which presents a single voice for higher education before Congress, federal agencies, the Supreme Court and federal courts.

"I am very honored to have been chosen to serve such an important organization," Hemenway said. "I plan to use this opportunity to ensure that the goals of higher education are met on a national level."

The council's membership includes about 1,600 accredited, degree-granting institutions from all sectors of higher education and nearly 200 national and regional higher education associations and organizations.

The council also operates a number of higher education programs designed to increase access to postsecondary education, promote equality, ensure quality education on the nation's campuses, and train new generations of higher education leaders.
