THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HOLDS ITS FIRST EVER OPEN HOUSE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6. THE OPEN HOUSE IS SCHEDULED FROM 10 A.M. TO 3 P.M. RAIN OR SHINE.
MARGEY FREDERICK IS ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS AND SCHOLARSHIPS, AND COORDINATOR OF THE KU VISITOR CENTER. SHE IS COORDINATING THE OPEN HOUSE ACTIVITIES.
FREDERICK HOPES THAT PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER BEFORE VISITED THE K-U CAMPUS IN LAWRENCE WILL FEEL PARTICULARLY WELCOME TO ATTEND.
Frederick: "I think the main purpose of the open house is to just get the public feeling comfortable on campus. We would just like parents, children, senior citizens, lots of families, students who are interested in KU, to come and visit." (13 sec.)
FREDERICK SAYS PEOPLE OF ALL AGES WILL ENJOY THE VARIETY OF SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES.
Frederick: "We have science demonstrations, we have a carnival on Jayhawk Boulevard, the School of Engineering is racing some cars. A really fun thing that the University Theater Department is doing, is a costume sale. Jerod Haase is doing several basketball clinics in Allen Field House. It's an opportunity for the public to stand down on the floor of the Field House and shoot baskets. There'll be lots of food around campus. And we're having free Jayhawk cookies. At 2:30 we're having a parade to kind of close the day, celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month." (33 sec.)
A COMPLETE SCHEDULE OF OPEN HOUSE EVENTS IS AVAILABLE BY LOGGING ONTO W.W.W.OPENHOUSE.KU.EDU
FREDERICK SAYS A FREE SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE AND LOTS OF VOLUNTEERS WILL HELP VISITORS GET WHERE THEY WANT TO GO.
Frederick: "We're running ten shuttle buses, so wherever you go, a bus should be by within 15 minutes. And we'll have lots of volunteers, we have over 500 volunteers in bright red t-shirts. They'll have maps, lists of activities, be able to point people as to where to go." (14 sec.)
FREDERICK SAYS THE OPEN HOUSE IS DESIGNED AS A FAMILY EVENT AND WILL PROVIDE VISITORS WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TAKES PLACE AT K-U.
Frederick: "A particular thing about the University of Kansas is the fact that we're researched based institution and therefore we are always trying to develop new and better ways to do things, so I think that the public will really find that interesting. Our life is just not learning from textbooks here. It's actually doing a tremendous amount of hands-on research. It's really an exciting, stimulating place" (21 sec.)
