KU Jazz Ensemble concert features trombone soloist

LAWRENCE -- Two KU jazz groups kick off a busy season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Lied Center.

Under the direction of Dan Gailey, KU Jazz Ensemble I performs with guest soloist Michael Hall, assistant professor of trombone. The 17-member group of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm instruments plays a repertoire that includes work by Jim McNeely, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Clare Fischer, Maria Schneider, Paul McKee and Mike Tomaro.

KU Jazz Ensemble II opens the concert. Directed by Gary Holmes, the group performs selected pieces from such artists as Bob Brookmeyer, John Coltrane, David Springfield, Herbie Hancock, Rob McConnell, Jesse Krebs and Tom Kubis.
