Kansas Woodwinds present an evening of variety

LAWRENCE -- In a spirit of collaboration between teachers and students, the Kansas Woodwinds perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in Swarthout Recital Hall.

The Kansas Woodwinds feature KU woodwind and horn faculty. The ensemble plays familiar arrangements for woodwind quintet, as well as work that layers additional musicians.

Robert Washburn's "Suite for Woodwind Quintet" is a charming standard on this concert's program. In Jean Fran¨aix's burlesque, "L'Heure du Berger," KU piano faculty member Jack Winerock joins the group. "Night Winds" by Roger C. Vogel, which adds saxophone to the woodwind quintet, brings a dense and somber air to the program. Finally, five KU music students join their teachers in a performance of Emile Bernard's "Divertissement," a three-movement work for double quintet.

The members of the Kansas Woodwinds are professors John Boulton, flute; Margaret Marco, oboe; Larry Maxey, clarinet; Paul Stevens, horn; Alan Hawkins, bassoon; and Vince Gnojek, saxophone.

Admission to the recital is free. For more information, contact the Department of Music and Dance at (785) 864-3436.
